Look around, and it won’t take long to see children suffering the pervasive effects of poverty. In our neighborhoods and communities, children are cold, going hungry at night, lacking access to healthy food, and without the basics needed to advance through education.
It’s a cause close to our hearts, and the Touchstone Essentials Foundation was established as a way to focus on the well-being of children. We’re committed to cultivating the next generation with a portion of the sale of every Touchstone product going to the Foundation.
We then donate to local organizations that are on the ground, giving a helping hand to families. Organizations like The Salvation Army, where thanks to our Members and Customers, we recently donated $5,000 to the Wake County chapter. With 91 cents of every dollar going directly to services, we learned just how much good it can do.
According to Paige Bagwell, Director of Operations and Communications, the need has never been greater. With 34 beds for homeless women and children, the Wake County shelter plays an essential role for families in need of a safe place to rest at night. “Most nights we house more than 34 so we have cots, mattresses and sleeping bags available for the overnight families that come in late,” says Paige.
Yet hope is on the horizon for the overflowing facility. As Paige explained, “Our new Center of Hope shelter will have the capability to house 92 beds, and we are excited to have the opportunity to give more families a safe and friendly environment.”
The Salvation Army does more than housing; it also provides a holistic approach to healing the devastating effects of a family in crisis, with psychological assessments conducted on homeless children throughout the county, along with making resources available for daycare, tutoring, and counseling and medical care.
The chapter is also at the forefront of Anti-Human Trafficking, where Paige says, “It is our focus to fight to bring an end to the unbelievable abuse of human trafficking, happening right here in our state. Our comprehensive case management program rescues victims, many of whom are children.”
This army for good works year round and at Christmastime is often the only “Santa” for families in need, where Touchstone was able to help last Christmas by providing a $10,000 donation. According to Paige, “Gifts range from new toys, stockings, bicycles and new clothing. This past Christmas 47,882 gifts were given to children in need.”
Our commitment is to donate to organizations rooted in local communities, with a global reach, just like The Salvation Army. They shine a light where there is none, and restore hope in the hearts of those needing help. That’s the good inside.
What can you do? Every product you buy, or every time you share Touchstone with others, add to the goodness, with a portion of each purchase going right to the Foundation. Our eco-friendly organic cotton grocery tote is also available with $5 on every tote donated. You can get your tote right here.
